Can-Am RV Center has a long history with the Hensley Hitch company going back to 1994. We have installed hundreds and hundreds of these marvels of engineering over the past three decades.
So it was a pleasure to visit Hensley Manufacturing in Romeo, Michigan this week and meet James Morrison the owner of the company.
The Hensley Hitch was engineered back in the early 1990's by Jim Hensley who set out to design a towing system that would completely eliminate trailer sway. This problem plagued the cars and trucks that most people towed with at the time with overhangs from the rear axle approaching six feet in length. Andy Thomson heard of this hitch when it was barely out of the proto-type stage and headed to Indianna to track down Jim and his revolutionary design. Jim was a brilliant but quiet man without a flair for salesmanship and finally agreed to let Andy purchase a hitch system. Can-Am set this up on their most challenging trailer/tow vehicle combination and the difference was remarkable. The combo that needed to be driven at 80 kms/hr max, could now exceed the speed limits of the 401 no problem! The company relocated to Michigan, Jim retired, and the patented Hensley Hitch went into full production with new management. And Andy bought another 10 Hensleys!
That was the beginning of a long and excellent history with Hensley Hitch, resulting in safe towing set-ups for Can-Am customers ever since. As vehicles evolved, so did their towing dynamics and the long overhang of the 90's and 2000's have all but disappeared. So although we don't put a Hensley on every towing combination we sell, it remains the Cadillac of hitch systems in our arsenal of towing solutions.
A couple of years ago Hensley Manufacturing was purchased by engineer James Morrison and revitalized with additional structural integrity and increased stability. The plant is using robotic welding and state of the art manufacturing to make their exceptional product. And when you couple this with a life-time warranty and after sales customer service that is second to none, you have a sure fire recipe for success!
I was impressed with the bright orange hitch heads all lined up ready for final assembly and the parts stacked up fresh out of the paint booth. The staff I met were friendly and helpful as was Mr. Morrison.
Thank you James for a great visit to the plant.
